Summary
Sheridan, following his check at Dinwiddie Courthouse, dug-in at Five Forks and following reinforcement, struck back at Pickett, hitting him in the front and flank with superior numbers. The Confederate position collapsed, exposing the entire right flank of the line around Petersburg. Grant at once ordered a general assault.
