Summary
Lee sent John B Gordon in a surprise attack against the Union right flank in an attempt to relax their grip on Petersburg long enough for the Army of Northern Virginia to break through the seige and join Johnston in North Carolina. The Confederate forces took the fort, but were thrown back after a desperate counter-attack.
