Battle Name : Trenton

Date(s) : 26 December 1776

Part of : American War of Independence ,

Outcome : A victory for American Continental Forces over British allied Hessian troops

Type of battle : Land

The American forces under Washington crossed the Delaware to attack 3 Hessian regiments billeted in Trenton. They were taken completely by surprise and overwhelmed, most being taken captive. Large quantities of badly-needed supplies were gathered too. American losses were negligible. The action also precipitated Gen. Cornwallis to move the main British force from Princeton to catch Washington.
