Summary
Part of 'The Race to the Sea'. The French 2nd Army (de Castelnau) was transferred from Lorraine to the area around Noyons to counter German moves to the Somme. Frontal attacks against German forces were thrown back and counter-attacks forced the French to hold while a new army was formed to repeat the process further north west.
