Summary
The Rock of Gibraltar was taken by Admiral Sir George Rooke in 1704 during the war of the Spanish Succession. Gibraltar is the key to the Mediterranean and the British have always been reluctant to surrender it. The dispute continues to this day though now in a diplomatic rather than violent way.
