Battle Name : Bergen

Date(s) : 19 September 1799

Part of : The French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars , French War of the Second Coalition ,

Outcome : A victory for Franco-Batavian Forces over Anglo-Russian forces

Type of battle : Land

An unsuccessful attempt by the joint British and Russian armies to break through a French and Dutch defensive line blocking the way south to Amsterdam from their landing positions at Helder.

The three attacks, by Abercrombie and Dundas on the flanks and Hermann's Russians in the centre, were uncoordinated, and although gains were made, Brune's lines held and the allied forces retired back to their original positions.
