Summary
Charlemagne as ruler of the Franks was concerned with regaining and protecting all of the lands which had traditionally been under Frankish control. He was able to disguise his attacks on pagan tribes particularly the Saxons and the Avars as a defence of Christendom. During his reign his armies fought against Avars, Byzantines, Danes, Muslims, Saxons and Slavs
