The Austrian force was initially quite small [est 1,800 ] but was able to pin the enemy until more troops [est 2,700 ] came up. The Austrians were outnumbered all through the engagement but were a mixed force of infantry, cavalry and artillery [ one Horse artillery battery and one Field artillery battery ] against infantry with only 6 guns. The Franco-Italians retreated towards Rivoli.
