The Peninsular Campaign

Campaign Name : The Peninsular Campaign

Date(s) : 1807 - 1814

Part of : The French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars ,

Summary

Britain's refusal to make peace with Napoleon caused him to embark on a trade war to close Europe to British trade. Portugal would not agree to join the pact and Napoleon proposed and pushed through a joint Spanish French invasion of Portugal. [The Spanish played very little part in this.] After some political wrangling Napoleon's next decision was to add Spain and Portugal to the French Empire. He occupied Spain and attempted to occupy Portugal. There then followed a joint British, Portuguese and Spanish campaign to push the French out of the Iberian Peninsular.
